The Limitations of ChatGPT: Unveiling Its Current Weaknesses
July 21st 2023
In the realm of artificial intelligence, ChatGPT has gained widespread recognition for its remarkable language generation capabilities. However, like any other AI system, it has its limitations. In this article, we'll explore some of the areas where ChatGPT occasionally falls short for our team, shedding light on those weaknesses. At SilverServers, we use ChatGPT quite often - it even helped us write this article! We believe in providing a comprehensive view of AI technologies, enabling our readers to make informed decisions.
Sharing Specific Information about Music
Although ChatGPT can provide information on real bands, it might struggle to generate accurate song titles when sharing song titles that contain specific words or information. When we asked for songs that include a particular person’s name in the title or lyrics, the AI invented fictional song titles for real bands instead of providing genuine examples. Relying solely on ChatGPT for this and similar purposes may yield misleading or irrelevant results.
While ChatGPT excels in generating textual content, it sometimes faces challenges when it comes to generating numbered lists. In some recent cases, the system was unable to list numbers beyond nine. Consequently, if you are writing a piece of content that contains steps or lists and the article requires a comprehensive list that goes beyond this limit, manual intervention or alternative methods may be necessary.
Partially Removing Repetitive Phrases or Words
ChatGPT struggles with partially removing a term or phrase that has been repeated excessively in a piece of content or a past suggestion. Instead of reducing the frequency of the term, it tends to remove the phrase entirely. This limitation can hinder the desired outcome, particularly when attempting to maintain coherence and balance within a piece of writing. It’s particularly limiting when you’re trying to balance an article’s keyword focus for SEO purposes.
While ChatGPT can handle basic mathematical operations, its proficiency in complex calculations can occasionally be questionable. Although it’s improving at producing reasonable results, on some occasions the output may seem completely erroneous or illogical. Relying solely on ChatGPT for complex mathematical computations is not advisable, and it's essential to cross-verify the output with reliable mathematical tools.
Carrying Out Multi-Step, Sequential Instructions
ie. Do this then that.
One of the noteworthy limitations of ChatGPT is its difficulty in comprehending multi-step instructions that involve sequential changes. When presented with a series of actions to be performed one after the other, the AI may falter in executing the steps accurately. For instance, if instructed to make one change and then another change to a given text, ChatGPT might overlook the need for a stepwise approach and attempt to take another approach like accomplishing both changes simultaneously. As a result, the output could combine the requested changes, neglect one of the modifications altogether, or make up a fully irrelevant result. To ensure the desired modifications are carried out correctly, we’ve found we typically need to provide clear instructions one step at a time and review the output for any unexpected alterations.
Writing a Requested Number of Paragraphs
Another area where ChatGPT faces limitations is in generating a requested number of paragraphs or words. While it generally excels at producing coherent and informative content, it may not always adhere strictly to the desired paragraph or word count. In some instances, it may fall short and provide less than requested, while in other cases, it might generate additional text. This discrepancy can impact the overall structure and flow of the text, requiring manual adjustments or additional editing to align with the intended format. We’ve found it important to review and edit the output to ensure it meets the desired requirements for paragraph length and structure.
Admitting It Doesn’t Know Something
While ChatGPT is designed to be a conversational AI, it lacks self-awareness when it comes to admitting its limitations or acknowledging gaps or biases in its knowledge. Although for certain potentially controversial topics it might begin a response with a note that it might not have the information necessary, it often tries to generate responses even when it lacks the necessary information, potentially leading to inaccurate or misleading answers. Users should exercise caution and verify the information obtained from ChatGPT when dealing with specialized or niche subjects.
ChatGPT, with its remarkable language generation capabilities, has revolutionized the field of AI and given our team an incredibly useful tool. However, it's important to recognize and understand its limitations. ChatGPT struggles with many types of requests beyond what we’ve experienced in our office. Additionally, when writing on sensitive topics, ChatGPT's sensitivity filters can produce polarized or useless results. At SilverServers, we believe in leveraging AI while maintaining a critical eye, ensuring that its strengths are utilized effectively while compensating for its weaknesses.
