From Our Data Centre to Yours: Remote Monitoring with SilverServers’ Custom Sensor System

In a previous post about our environmental monitoring system, we shared the story of how SilverServers developed a custom environmental monitoring and automation system to keep a closer eye on our infrastructure. It started as an in-house solution for detecting temperature shifts, humidity spikes, equipment issues, and power events in our data centre. But since then, it’s become something more.

Today, we want to take you inside how we use these sensors every day at our Kamloops data centre and surrounding area—and how that same technology can help monitor yours.

How We Monitor The Environment Inside and Outside The Kamloops Data Centre in Real Time

Inside and outside our Lorne Street facility, and throughout the city, sensors are deployed to measure:

  • Temperature and humidity around racks and HVAC systems
  • Air pressure in server zones
  • Refrigerant levels and performance in industrial A/C units
  • Power consumption and voltage drops
  • Network usage and server activity
  • Door positions and generator activity
  • Even soil hydration around landscaped areas

These readings are transmitted to our internal dashboard, updated live, and monitored around the clock. Alerts are sent instantly to our team when any measurement crosses a threshold—whether it's a slow voltage drop, rising ambient temperature, or unexpected door activity. We’ve integrated this system directly into our building automation workflow so responses can be immediate and, when appropriate, automated.

What we’ve learned? Environmental awareness is critical. Even minor shifts—like a subtle change in refrigerant pressure—can be early signs of a larger issue. By catching them early, we prevent downtime, protect hardware, and ensure stable hosting conditions for our clients.
